Martensitic stainless steel is a relatively common classification of stainless steel materials. The application of this type of stainless steel material is particularly convenient, especially in welding. Martensitic stainless steel is particularly favored by users. The processability of martensitic stainless steel when heated is particularly outstanding, and this is recognized. Martensitic stainless steel is often compared with austenitic stainless steel, which are the two more common stainless steels.

1. Austenitic stainless steel

Austenitic stainless steel has an austenitic structure with a face-centered cubic structure.

Industrial grades can be divided into two categories: Cr-Ni (300 series) and Cr-Ni-Mn-N (200 series).

Under normal heat treatment process, the matrix structure of steel is austenite. Under improper heat treatment process or different heating conditions, a small amount of carbide and ferrite structure may exist in the austenite matrix.

The mechanical properties of austenitic stainless steel cannot be changed through heat treatment, and can only be strengthened by cold deformation.

Different steel types suitable for various applications can be obtained by adding alloying elements such as molybdenum, copper, and silicon, such as 316L, 304Cu, etc.

Specific characteristics: non-magnetic, good low-temperature performance, easy to form, and good weldability.

2. Martensitic stainless steel

Martensitic stainless steel has a body-centered cubic ferrite structure, and its structure cannot be changed by heat treatment.

Martensitic stainless steel has the characteristics of strong magnetism, easy molding, resistance to rust and pitting corrosion.

According to the carbon and nitrogen content in the steel, martensitic stainless steel can be divided into two categories: high-purity martensitic stainless steel (such as 409L) and ordinary martensitic stainless steel (such as 430).

The chemical composition content of martensitic stainless steel is quite different from that of austenitic stainless steel. Therefore, when purchasing stainless steel materials, you can pay attention to the composition list of stainless steel. Most of them can be found on the composition list. You can tell what kind of stainless steel it is.

What material is carbon steel?

Carbon steel, also called carbon steel, is an iron-carbon alloy with an internal carbon content of close to 2%. In carbon steel materials, in addition to containing carbon elements, there are many other components, such as elements, sulfur elements or silicon elements. Generally speaking, if the amount of carbon contained in carbon steel is relatively high, the harder it will be, resulting in The intensity will be higher. Just be aware that the higher the carbon content, the lower the plasticity will be.
